Project Based Learning Over view

1st December 2015
Mrs Storey's Class

Will be focusing on a project with the charity “Making Winter Warmer”, providing handmade snoods to go in packs for the homeless.

The children will be looking at a range of factors linked to homelessness and taking care of ourselves, including feeding ourselves well on a budget, dressing well in colder weather, homelessness around the planet and what we can do to help those who are less fortunate in our community.

We will be running a food and clothing collection to donate to the homeless shelter and to compile rucksacks to give out to local homeless people, containing what they will need to take care of themselves in the harsher winter weather.

Mrs Ashurst Class

We are aiming to raise awareness of the importance of helping others at Christmas time, focussing on Benton Dog and Cat Shelter.  We are going to design and produce leaflets and posters to display around school and the local area, where possible in order to raise awareness of our cause.  We will also take some of our leaflets to the local Primary Schools. Collection points will be placed in the staffroom and at the entrance so both staff, students and members of the public can donate.  We are also going to ask for warm blankets, bedding and towels to be donated, to help keep the animals warm during winter. We are also going to produce catnip toys and dog treats, that we will sell and then donate the money we make to the shelter as well.

Mrs Williams Class

This terms PBL will be focussing on Road Safety both as a driver and as a passenger. Students will be working with AOne and the Fire Service during the week both in school and site visits on Friday 11th December and Tuesday 15th December. We will be designing a poster for AOne about road safety and they will announce the winner on Exhibition day.

The aim of the project is to raise awareness of dangers on the road in winter including ice and snow and being under the influence of drink and drugs. The class will learn about the whole process from prevention using grit to emergency services dealing with the consequence of an accident.

Mrs Ross-Ballard Class

We are making a short film on British Wildlife.  We will be filming, editing, drafting scripts and conducting interviews.

To prepare we have been studying British Wildlife this half term and we have read 'The Hedgehog', 'Fantastic Mr Fox' and 'The Owl who was afraid of the dark'.

We will be taking part in an online film making course, a visitor will be coming on Monday to assist us from a local film producer and we will be visiting the Tyneside Cinema for a guided tour on Tuesday of next week.

Our aim is upload our video to an appropriate internet site and potentially have it shown in the Tyneside cinema.

Mr Belcher's Class

This terms PBL for Form NB will be looking at a range of different sports which will hopefully give the answer to our driving question of "Why do teenagers give up on recreational sport?" The project will consist of discovering a new sport each day from visiting experts and trials. Each morning will start with a look at nutrition needed to fuel sport and every afternoon will be spent designing and making our very own onsite MTB track. Students are encouraged to bring in wet weather gear and will need PE kits for the week and where possible a spade.

Mrs Hayes Class

We will be developing their awareness of the emotional and physical aspects of sexual health. Pupils will be creating a comic strip flyer/ cartoon to inform about sexual health and to promote positive body image. The final products will be used by the Dallaglio foundation and Youth clubs around the Newcastle.

Sixth Form

This project gives the students the opportunity to design the outside of the lodge and look at how they can create a café within the lodge.

Students will meet with JW Peters to discuss the outside space and look at how they can develop the garden. A small group of students will visit the café at Southlands school to see how they run their café on Thursday 10th December.

The 6th form will present their proposal for the café and the garden during the Exhibition afternoon.
