3rd December 2015
The students and staff of Cramlington Hillcrest School celebrated National Anti-Bullying Week which ran from 16th-20th November. The theme this year is ‘Make a Noise about Bullying’. During the course of the week the students focussed on friendship and team building. Anti-Bullying awareness lessons were taught by teaching staff, we held a poster competition and had a dress up in LOUD coloured clothing day on Friday to raise money for the Anti-Bullying Alliance. The students signed the Stonewall No Bystanders pledge acknowledging that they would promote a positive attitude to bullying.

We arranged for speakers to visit the school from the LGBT Federation who delivered workshops to Key Stage 4 and 5 to raise the awareness of Homophobic, Biphobic and Transphobic bullying. Students looked at what it is, why it is harmful, hurtful and sometimes a crime. The students explored ways in which they could challenge this type of bullying and also what happens in other parts of the world for instance in Nigeria. The work that was completed by Louise and Abraham from the federation was fantastic, all of the students involved thoroughly enjoyed the workshops and learning about other parts of the world. Their engagement was great, a lot of questions were asked which formed interesting discussions and debates. The completed workshops accredited part of the federations work towards National Hate Crime Awareness.

The week also saw the Show Racism the Red Card team visit us to deliver Anti-Racism workshops to raise awareness and promote equality for all. The team brought along with them Olivier Bernard an ex Newcastle United footballer who ran football coaching with all students across the school. This was great fun and all of the students queued up to get Olivier’s autograph, the students were quite star struck to say the least. This was an enjoyable and educating day which is always a good mix for teenagers and young adults. The fun didn’t stop there, Olivier had an interview with ITV news and two of our students were lucky enough to be picked to appear on the local TV news that night playing football with Olivier.

In Friday’s assembly the poster competition prize winners and runners up were announced and students were awarded prizes which included vouchers as well as certificates to celebrate their hard work. Students and staff donated money to come to school in colourful clothing, a big thank you to all parents, students and staff who helped us to raise money for such a worthy cause. All of the staff are extremely proud of the students work, and after such a successful and fun packed week I think it is safe to say that Hillcrest School really did ‘Make a Noise about Bullying’.
